When I think of the word game in cultural terms, to me it’s a really general term like image or the written word, right? So, the written word is something that’s used in all different kinds of cultural forms. There are really difficult challenging books like Finnegans Wake or maybe a textbook in, uh, particle physics or something. Um, and there’s also magazine and, uh, you know, uh, little text advertisements that appear, you know above your Google page that - that are - that are there to have you read them as quickly as possible. And things in the middle like journalism, which is meant to give you a story that’s usually easy to read but - but gets deeper the, you know, and more complex the more you go. So, I think games are similar. Some games really are meant for expert players. And I think that’s okay. Um, the phenomenon of [E sports] for example is all about games that are really complex and challenging and - and you can keep on playing them for years and years of full time practice and study, professional athletes, and still you are getting better at them, you know, exploring them, finding new strategies, uh, trying to counter what you think, you know, the team you’re going to face the next season is going to do against you. So, so, those are expert games, require a lot of literacy. There also are plenty of games that people are making for the masses, so to speak. Right? Games that you can play on your iPhone that are - that are designed to kind of ease you in gently. And games are like music. I think that - that increasingly it’s not going to be about are you a gamer or not, it’s just going to be what kind of games do you like to play. Um, there’s some Pew study showed that something like 98% of American teenagers play games in - in some way. I think it was 99% of boys, 97% of girls. Um, so it’s - it’s incredible pervasive. And we’re not [musicers], right? We - we simply like different kinds of music. Some are more connoisseurs and - and fans. Some like a broad range. Some go really narrow. I think the same thing is going to happen with games. And I think that that’s okay.
