I think anyone can come up with a straightforward character design. The strong guy with big muscles, and such. But what if someone looks weak, and their inner strength is seeping out? Or maybe someone is really strong, but he has one mortal weakness? These are more compelling characters because they have flaws. This is true for humans, or robots, or whatever else you want. You get bored of perfect characters very quickly. I think good character designs should incorporate some flaws in order to create a more attractive characters. That's how I design characters.
